Guide to Living in Bramhall
Short History of Bramhall
Bramhall, now in the metropolitan borough of Stockport, Manchester, was formerly an agricultural village formed from a collection of hamlets and did not develop into a village in its own right until after the station was opened in 1845. In that year the Macclesfield branch of the Manchester and Birmingham railway opened, connecting Bramhall on a direct line to Manchester. The effect of this was to move the centre of the village to its present position near the station, about one mile away from Bramhall Green. It was the arrival of the railway that changed Bramhall into the more expensive residential area that it is today.
The centre of the village was formerly Bramhall Green at the gates of Bramhall Hall. Bramhall Hall is one of the finest black and white timbered manor houses in the country, standing in 64 acres of beautiful landscaped grounds, three miles from the town centre. Built largely during the 15th and 16th centuries with some alterations and additions in Victorian times, the hall offers a charming glimpse of several hundred years of family history. Tours of the building are available to the general public.
Bramhall has continued to expand rapidly, the population having increased tenfold in 90 years. This was due to large housing estates being built on what was once farmland in order to attract people to the area.
