Guide to Living in Heald Green
Heald Green
Heald Green is a village situated in the borough of Stockport, in the county of Greater Manchester. The area, located in the North West England, is home to a small and bustling community. The village is popular for commuters to Stockport and Manchester city centre, which are both accessible due to the proximity of Heald Green to the M60 ring road. Furthermore it is served by Heald Green railway station, which offers quick transport to Manchester Airport, Manchester Piccadilly and Stockport. The station was first opened almost one hundred years ago, with trains to nearby Wimslow and Longsight.
Heald Green is a very peaceful suburb that has an active community life and despite having easy links to much larger places there is much on offer in the village itself. About a mile from Heald Green is an extremely important and interesting industrial heritage site; Quarry Bank Mill. Now owned by the National Trust, this was once a large cotton mill that was built in 1784 during the industrial revolution. This site is one of the best preserved factories of this historic era. As well as being a museum of the local cotton industry the mill has working machinery and the much of the estate has been lovely restored. For example the mill workers’ village is now restored to how it was over 300 years ago. This is a fantastic place to visit and will teach you all sorts about the cotton industry than thrived in this area of England.
In keeping with the traditional theme, Heald Green also boasts a local theatre company. The Heald Green Theatre Company was first established in 1962 and was housed in the converted chapel grounds in nearby Cheadle Hospital. The company moved in 2000 to converted squash court at the nearby golf course. Members of the theatre are active fundraisers and their hard work has recently resulted in a facelift for the auditorium. The group offer a varied and extremely interesting programme of performance throughout the year. For example an adaption of work by Irish author Frank McGuinness can be seen in the New Year.
With many of the inhabitants of Heald Green commuting to the bright lights of Manchester and Stockport, there is an increasing demand for quality bars and restaurants. People want places to relax after a hard days work and the village does not disappoint. One of the newest restaurants is Sangam, which offers contemporary Indian cuisine. The first of this chain of restaurants opened in Manchester over ten years ago and has spawned four other restaurants in Greater Manchester. The original restaurant in Manchester is very highly rated and extremely popular and the newest addition to the chain, in Heald Green, is in the same mould. If you are more in the mood for food from the Orient, then the Fragrant Harbour is a good bet. This Chinese restaurant has been open in Heald Green for countless years, and has a real local atmosphere. In fact some of those who eat at the restaurant have been doing so for around twenty years. However for a really posh meal you should visit the Moss Nook, situated on the edge of Heald Green. Although the prices are a lot higher than in other local restaurants you won’t be disappointed by the, Michelin star awarded, food. The decadent interior provides the perfect atmosphere while you tuck into the gourmet food. With the menu changing with the seasons, the Moss Nook is a place that requires repeat eating.
In terms of nightlife, Heald Green has plenty on offer including the Griffin where one can sample a selection of real ales. The Heald Green is a beefeater pub that offers relatively cheap drinks and food and is popular in the evenings. After a night out why not start the morning by visiting the Heald Green shopping area, which has shops to fulfil all the needs of the local community. The centre contains almost 50 businesses including butchers, food and veg stores and larger chain stores such as HMV and New Look. Also housed in this shopping centre is the local library, which is well equipped with modern facilities such as internet access and DVD rentals.
Clearly Heald Green is a thriving community with much going on. It is now wonder many people choose to live in this village and commute to the busy hubs of nearby Stockport and Manchester. There is no doubt that Heald Green will continue to grow and prosper in the future.
