Guide to Living in Knutsford

Guide to Knutsford

Cheshire Plain is famous for its pretty villages and stunning countryside and at its heart is Knutsford. Home of the RHS Flower Show and with many fantastic restaurants and bars, Knutsford is a classic English town with plenty to do. The town’s name is derived from the Danish King Canute supposedly ‘forded’ the River Lily in 1016. Many Danish-originated names are found in Knutsford and ‘Cunutesford’ appears in the Domesday Book (1086). In 1292 the town was granted its first charter. Knutsford is a popular town to buy a house in the North and England and with its wealth of schools, sports grounds and eateries it’s easy to see why.

Shopping in Knutsford

Unusually for a town of its size, Knutsford has relatively few shops compared to its large amount of restaurants and pubs. On Regent Street there are some new large stores such as a Waterstones. Booths Supermarket is the only supermarket in the town so the local greengrocers and butchers thrive. For good local produce try Holly Tree Farm on Chester Road. They locally source meat, vegetables and eggs and are a great alternative to supermarket fare.

Sports

Sports teams are abundant in Knutsford and you can find rugby union, cricket, tennis, squash, hockey and of course football teams in the town. In fact, Sir Bobby Charlton is from Knutsford, so the town’s football pedigree cannot be denied! The Knutsford Hockey Club is 100 years old and runs mens teams, a ladies team as well as teams for kids. The Knutsford Rugby Club has only been established since 2004 but has already been promoted a division. In 1989 Knutsford’s village cricket team, Toft, won the National Village Championship trophy at Lords. Knutsford also has a football club who currently play in Division One of the Cheshire Association Football League.

Culture

Knutsford has many historical things to see. St John the Baptist’s Church instance was consecrated in 1744 and is a beautiful building. The Knutsford Little Theatre has amateur productions from plays to opera throughout the year. Visiting theatre companies also put on professional touring productions at the theatre. Elsewhere there is the Civic Centre which has art exhibitions and concerts and also houses the Knutsford Studio Cinema which shows everything from art-house cinema to this week’s blockbusters.

Nightlife

Knutsford’s night-life is rich and varied. The Duke of Portland pub in Pennys Lane was voted 2007 Pub of the Year in Cheshire and also serves food. For a great bar with live music on Thursday and Friday night and Sunday afternoon, you can’t beat the Knutsford Wine Bar. The Bar Moda is a great relaxed bar which also has an outdoor terrace for the warmer evenings. If cocktails are your thing then you can’t go wrong! With Macclesfield and Manchester not too far away, it’s also easy to hit some really massive clubs and not miss the last train home to Knutsford.

Restaurants

Eating out is what Knutsford caters for best. With everything from Chinese to Italian, Thai to traditional English fare, you will certainly not go hungry in this Cheshire town. Zizzi offers a wide array of well-priced Italian food. With authentic Italian wines to complement your meal, it is a very good value evening out. For Mediterranean cuisine, try The Stuffed Olive at the Longview Hotel. It is the first restaurant of its type to open in Knutsford and is situated in the attractive setting of the heath.

Eastern cuisine is also well catered for in the town. The Samrab Thai Restaurant in Silk Mill Street carries a constantly changing menu and even stocks real ale. If you fancy a Chinese, try the Man Zen restaurant, a trendy venue that specialises in seafood. For a curry, Mughli is a decent all-rounder. It has a big menu and is said to serve the best Apna Lamb for miles around!

Knutsford newest restaurant is the Loch Fyne Seafood Bar and Grill, which not only presents you with a delicious meal, but also offers a fun night out. Finally, if eating in a large group, Gusto has the option of the ‘Eating With Friends’ menu which lessens your choice as a diner, but seriously lowers the bill. The restaurant has a very friendly atmosphere.

Facilities

Knutsford provides for all emergencies. The police station is situated in Toft Road. There is also a hospital (Knutsford and District Community Hospital) near the town centre, as well as several doctors surgeries. As far as public transport goes, the train station is at Toft Road and has regular departures into Manchester and Chester. If travelling by road, Knutsford has excellent links to the motorway (junction 19 on the M6 and junction 7 on the M56), so nowhere is ever too far away when you’re in Knutsford.
