Guide to Living in Northenden

In the north west of England lies Northenden, an area of Wythenshawe, at the south end of the city of Manchester, seven miles from the city centre, and on the south bank of the River Mersey.

History

Northenden used to be a small, independent village. However, it became part of Manchester in 1931, and has seen many changes since then. Its distance from Manchester enabled Northenden to avoid the 19th century Industrial Revolution that enveloped much of Lancashire, and it remained fairly rural which it still is – apart from having the M56 and M60 motorways now running across either end of the village.

Living in Northenden

Today Northenden is a very popular and sought-after place to live especially with commuters to Manchester. Northenden village is a bustling centre, with a good range of shops, banks, restaurants and bars. There is a good library and other amenities.

Excellent public transport provides regular buses to the Manchester city centre, the airport and other parts of south Manchester. There are 11 buses an hour from Northenden into the centre of Manchester from Monday to Saturday and 5 in the evenings and on Sundays. With this frequent service, it is easy to take the short ride into the city. Many people enjoy living in the relative peace of Northenden village after a week working in the city.

One particular area of interest is Palatine Road which is a product of the 19th century, lined with distinguished Victorian Houses as well as contemporary residences. Christie Hospital backs onto Palatine Road, and it is also the home of the Northern Lawn Tennis Club. The idea of forming a tennis club was borne out of the first world war. Ex-servicemen wanted somewhere to meet after the war was over, and consequently the club was formed, mainly as a social club. Over the years, the club has evolved. Now of course it has members of both sexes and has a lively programme of events.

There are small parks in Northenden – on Homewood Road and Kenworthy Lane. There are playing fields, meadows and Mersey valley walks on the other side of the motorway which can be reached by footpath. There are three local golf courses.

Northenden Golf Club is the jewel in the crown of the South Manchester courses. Tony Jacklin, Sandy Lyle, Nick Faldo, Bob Charles, Manuel Pinero and Greg Norman are among many of the stars who played at the club in the annual pro-am tournament in the 1970’s and 1980’s. The Greens Project took place in 2005 when members of Northenden voted by a big majority to rebuild all of the 18 greens to the United States Greenkeepers Association specification. This has ensured that Northenden Golf Club is the jewel in the crown of the South Manchester courses.

The nearest indoor leisure facilities are two miles away at Wythenshawe Forum centre which is a modern safe and welcoming building at the heart of the community. The centre offers leisure and learning. Childcare facilities are provided here too. The leisure facilities including a swimming pool, gymnasium and fitness centre.

Northenden Players Theatre Club (NPTC) has been in existence for more than 60 years. There are over 340 members and over 260 Season Ticket holders.

Residents of Northenden take a great interest and pride in their village. Northenden Civic Society meets regularly to consider issues relating to the village including law and order, road safety and planning.

Northenden is also home to one of the many Official Manchester City Supporters Club branches. Meetings at are held at 8pm every 1st Monday of the month at the Northenden Social Club on Palatine Road. If you fancy a good night out with like-minded City supporters, quizzes, special guests, cheap pints and old fashioned banter about the team this is a great place to go.

Shopping in Northenden

After a recent half a million pound regeneration scheme, shoppers flock to Northenden. The Farmers’ Market has become a permanent fixture. The specialist food market on Palatine Road, which operates on the first Saturday of each month is very popular with customers, traders and local businesses. Other exciting major improvements are planned for the area including other types of markets, perhaps clothing or antiques.

In addition to other recent improvements, trees are to be planted along the parade to create the effect of an avenue. Cycle parking facilities are being added and new paving stones laid. Altogether, Northenden is benefiting from a major facelift which is beneficial to its residents and visitors. With its many attractions, it is no wonder that Northenden is a very popular place to live.
