Guide to Living in Wilmslow

Wilmslow

In the Borough of Macclesfield and just south of Manchester lies the town of Wilmslow. The River Bollins flows through The Carrs, recreational fields that lead right to Bank Square, the town centre. Until the industrial revolution brought a railway station to the town in 1842, Wilmslow comprised of nothing more than a few farms and a church. There is evidence however of life in Wilmslow from as early as 100AD, due to the discovery of Lindlow Man in 1984, a freeze dried body of a druid from nearly 2000 years ago.

The town is a popular Northern town for families as it has many schools, both state and private. For star-spotters, the town is home to several stars of Coronation Street, several current and ex-football players and was once the home to Alan Turing, the driving force behind the team that broke Germany’s Enigma code in World War II.

Shopping

Wilmslow has plenty of shops to suit everyone. Department stores in the town include Marks and Spencers and John Lewis. The town’s two supermarkets are a Waitrose and a Sainsburys. There are many speciality shops too, including the Chocolate Trading Company. A few of your favourite high street fashion shops are available in Wilmslow; you’ll find Claire’s Accessories, Jaeger and Phase Eight amongst others.

Sports

Wilmslow has a leisure centre near the railway station which has many sports clubs you can join. It also contains two indoor swimming pools. The town is also home to a Rugby Union club and a lacrosse team, which is in the UK’s premier league. Wilmslow Albion FC is currently in the Manchester League’s first division and the team was runner-up in the 2001-2002 season. The team is based at Oakwood Farm, just north of Wilmslow. Despite just one football team, Wilmslow has no less than five cricket teams. These include Wilmslow Cricket Club, who are in Cheshire Cricket’s Premier Division.

Culture

The 85-seat Wilmslow Theatre is home to the Green Theatre Room Company, an amateur company who have been established since 1924. The theatre itself is a converted Victorian cottage and shirt factory. Wilmslow also has a thriving chess club that competes in the Stockport Chess League and meets every Tuesday evening at the Ship Inn. There are many other clubs and societies in the town including the Wilmslow Historical Society and the Decorative and Fine Arts Society. Wilmslow Symphony Orchestra are an amateur orchestra who play at some prodigious venues in the UK. They were chosen to play at Making Music’s debut concert at Bridgwater Hall, Manchester’s state-of-the-art music venue.

Nightlife

Wilmslow’s nightlife can’t match up to the wild nights you’d experience in nearby Manchester and Macclesfield, but there are still plenty of varied bars and pubs to keep you entertained. The Suede Bar and Coffee Shop in Grove Street is a cafe by day and funky bar by night. From 7pm-late every evening, it offers a laid-back lounge-style venue. There are many traditional English pubs (some of which also do good food) including The Kings Arms, The Hogshead and The Merlin.

Restaurants

Wilmslow has a variety of eateries that cater for every taste and budget. For fans of Oriental cuisine there is Harry’s Cantonese on Grove Street and Samsi Yakatori does excellent sushi on Wareham Street. Top Wok in Dean Row Road has special nights for events such as Chinese New Year. For a more Mediterranean vibe, try The King William, a traditional tapas grill that is also a guesthouse. Heddy’s Restaurant in Water Lane offers Middle Eastern fare and is a distinctive addition to the Cheshire food scene.

In warmer months it has a patio for al-fresco dining. If you fancy a good curry, there is The Mumbai, right in the centre of town on Bank Square. For Italian there are popular pizza chains Pizza Express and Domino’s Pizza are in town, as well as the authentic Est Est Est. Also in the town centre is Delizia, a salad bar that also provides sandwich delivery to local businesses.

Facilities

As well as a police station, fire station and a medical centre, Wilmslow has a public library which is open from 9:30am-evening every morning except Sunday. The Wilmslow Tourist Information Centre is open from 8:45am every weekday and 9am on Saturday. It gives information on everything in the Macclesfield Borough. Wilmslow’s railway station is on Station Road and has hourly services into Manchester and to Manchester Airport, only a 20 minute train ride away (the airport is the busiest non-London airport in the England). Wilmslow has a limited amount of bus routes, but there are fairly regular services to Manchester, Macclesfield, Stockport and the neighbouring towns. If travelling by car, Wilmslow is adjacent to the A34 and is only a mile or two from the M56.
