Guide to Living in Wythenshaw

Wythenshawe

Located in the Southern area of the city of Manchester, Wythenshawe is home to over 60,000 people. This district is separated into nine areas, which include: Baguley, Benchill, Peel Hall and Newall Green, to name a few. Wythenshawe once comprised of a huge stately home, Wythenshawe Hall, which claimed most of the districts land. However this land, which was used as farmland, was eventually turned into housing in order to meet the demands of a growing population in Manchester. Wythenshawe Hall is still standing today and is open to the public as well as accommodating a community farm and a horticulture centre. The grand stately home is also a site of English history. During the English Civil War, Oliver Cromwell attacked and conquered Wythenshawe Hall and today the hall serves as a museum in homage to these events.

When extra housing was needed for the city of Manchester, Wythenshawe became home to numerous council-owned housing estates. Nowadays much of the housing is privately owned. The increased number of people in the area led to the development of Wythenshawe Hospital. This large NHS hospital is the location for most of the services provided by the University Hospital of South Manchester. The hospital has recently seen the opening of the Nightingale Centre and Genesis Prevention centre, which house Europe’s first research and education centre for training specialist’s in breast cancer. The centre, which cost £14 million, will also contain a clinical service for treatment of breast cancer.

As well as the large hospital, Wythenshawe has much to offer its large community. The Wythenshawe Youth Theatre offers training to budding young performers in the local area. This voluntary organisation, has been offering children between the ages of 11-17 a chance to get involved with all aspects of the theatre, for almost ten years. This organisation is a great way for young people to get involved and learn about the theatre as well as increase their confidence and make friends. Wythenshawe also has many green areas, including parks and woods, all of which can be enjoyed throughout the year. In fact a Wythenshawe Regeneration Team has been put together in order to increase the facilities available and to try and encourage more people to take advantage of the beautiful green areas.

Wythenshawe town centre is a great place for those who enjoy a good bit of shopping. Renovation work that took place over three years around the turn of the new millennium has transformed this shopping centre. The addition of a huge new ASDA store in 2007 has spawned many new shops nearby. The town centre has been made to be more aphetically pleasing, for example a new mosaic has been created depicting the features of the town and the high street is now locked at night to prevent vandalism. Furthermore 2001 saw the redevelopment of the Wythenshawe Forum Centre, which houses the local library amongst other services. The centre was remodeled and the services provided were improved, for example brand new leisure facilities were put in place with a state of the art gym and swimming pool. The Forum Centre also offers many places to eat, drink and relax.

Wythenshawe also boasts its own football team, and although it may not be in the same league as nearby premier league clubs Manchester United and Manchester City it is still popular with the local community. Wythenshawe Town was formed in 1946 and was called North Withington FC, but changed its name upon moving to Ericstan Park in Wythenshawe. The club joined the Manchester League in 1974 and has regular fixtures with nearby teams such as Milton FC and Hollinwood. The football club is great for the community and gives younger players a chance to shine in the junior section, which is also involved in regular league action. However football is not the only activity that is thriving in Wythenshawe, with lots on offer to young and old alike. For example the Wythenshawe cycling club has lots of new cycle paths and is a great way to keep fit. One of the best ways to keep up with all that is going on in the town is by checking out the local newspaper; ‘Wythenshawe World’, which includes all the local news and events.

Wythenshawe may be home to a number of large housing estates but the area has a great local spirit and a lot has been achieved in terms of the areas redevelopment. Many new services are now on offer and the town is likely to continue to grow and evolve in the future.
